How To Achieve Success And Make Money On YouTube

YouTube is continuously growing in popularity, so there's no wonder that it can become a great source of income for video creators. But how can you make money on YouTube and how easy it actually is?

If you've decided to make a YouTube channel just because you think you can earn a lot of money, effortlessly, you're making a big mistake! YouTube is not a quick way to make easy money!

Achieving success on YouTube doesn't mean you only have to upload a couple of videos and hope one of them goes viral. To actually make money on YouTube, you have to constantly upload high quality content to your channel and build up a large audience and fan base. Only then, YouTube will notice how many subscribers you have and how many views you're getting. And they'll position your videos higher in their search results. Therefore, it's only at that point that you'll be able to make any money.

How Does Making Money on YouTube Work?

If you don't know how YouTube works, making money on this platform actually comes down to one thing, advertising.

Basically YouTube will place adds around your content and reward you with income. To earn any money you must become a YouTube partner first. And to do that, you must have no strikes on your channel and upload regular high quality content.

After you've done that, you can enable your account for monetization. Once one of your videos has been approved, YouTube will place ads around your videos. However, this won't return any income until you've linked an adsense account. Adsense is google's way of paying content creators money in exchange for displaying their adds.

If you have a massive channel, sometimes you could move to a crowdfunding, or a sponsorship, but for 95% of all YouTubers, their monthly paycheck, comes from advertisers who want to promote their content online.

Furthermore, I recommend that you stay away from networks.  They'll want to lock you into their contract in exchange for publicity, but don't provide much support if you run into problems.

One thing about Adsense

If you're considering getting into the YouTube business, make sure you understand one thing well. Which is that you don't get paid every time someone watches one of your videos and you only get paid when your viewer interacts with an ad that may or may not even appear. So how much will you earn?

The Earning Process

If you're confused let me just show you a graphic so you understand better:

Let's say that this dollar represents the amount of money you can make on YouTube. Right away, half of this dollar is taken away, because ads only show on your videos for about half of the time. Then you're also going to lose another part of what you have left, because people are also only going to interact with your videos about half of the time.

Unfortunately you still don't get the quarter of the dollar that's left because since you're videos are on YouTube, Google comes in and takes another half of your earnings. Therefor, you're basically down to one eight of the original amount and this is mostly what you'll be getting.

For every 1000 ad views you might get around $1 to $4 or $5. This is commonly known as CPM (Cost Per Millenia). Which determines how much money you're being returned for your content.

As an example, let's say you're channel has earned a $100 worth of views. Google will take roughly around 45%, leaving you with no more than $55. In addition, if you are also signed up to a network, they will usually take an additional 30%. This will leave you with around $38.50. However, if you're viewers use adblock that amount is even smaller.

Now that you see how little you are actually getting, I hope this gives a good understanding of the earning process.

Social Blade

If you wanna see more specifics on how much a YouTuber is actually making you can go to the site socialblade.com.

Here you'll find view totals, estimated earnings, subscribers number, historical graphs, and so on, for anyone you search for.

Moreover, from what I've gathered, you would be making $100 per month if you get 50.000 views in that time.

That's clearly not the best salary to expect and you do need to take that into consideration before getting started with YouTube.

How to start making money on YouTube

Building Your Audience on YouTube

For a YouTube channel to actually be profitable, you would need a loyal, engaged community and a continuous flow of great videos. Most successful YouTubers say that you first need to build your audience and make consistent videos  that you and everyone of your viewers love to watch. Only then can you start earning money.

Basically, everyone that has started a YouTube channel can apply to be a YouTube Partner, if it is available in their country. Although,  they have recently changed their rules and as of February 21, only when you've reached 4000 watch hours in the previous 12 months and 1000 subscribers, you'll have your activity reviewed against their policies. If they like what they see, you'll be able to join and begin linking ads on your content.

Moreover, channels that don't meat certain requirements will actually be completely removed from the ability of having a chance to monetize their channel.

The reason it is so strict is because they want to “ensure revenue only flows to creators who are playing by the rules.”

Investing in Equipment

People are not going to enjoy watching videos on 360p-480p forever. Therefor, if you want to actually be successful, you need to invest a little money into equipment. For example, a good camera, lights, audio equipment ( E.G RODE Video-Micro) as well as a decent camera stand (Tripod).

3. Producing Content

I am well aware that, there are a lot of YouTubers nowadays, and I know that being unique is hard. Although, I also know it's certainly not impossible. To increase your view count and fan base, you need to follow several rules scrupulously:

Stay focused on keywords

Try to create content that is relevant and up to date, something that people will highly be likely to search for.

Use great titles and pictures

Ask yourself this: What would you rather click on? “My Uncle's Weekend” or “Massive Uncle Lifts Weights”? Also, would you rather click on “a colored background picture” or “on a cute puppy/cat”?

You might think that it is your video content that matters most, but it's not always the case. Your headlines or video titles also need to be given attention, because they might be all that readers see.

Most people that go to your YouTube channel will only read the headline. Which means that you need to make your headline interesting enough to entice them to watch the video that you have posted to your channel.

Did you know that about 8 out of 10 people will read the headline, but only 2 out of 10 will watch the video? Therefor, you need to dedicate more time creating headlines that excite and actually get people to view the video.

Collaboration

This is a great way to build a bigger fan base, especially if you collaborate with someone who has a lot more subscribers than you. It builds a fun and healthy environment that more people can relate to.

Minutes or Less

When you are creating YouTube content, you need to keep in mind that your viewers have brief attention to spans. This means that the content you create should be able to be viewed in the span of 7 minutes or less.

Long videos that go on and on are not the ideal way to keep people coming back to your YouTube channel. Make it short and nice, but still offer the viewer something of value. This is possible to achieve, but it might take you some time to figure it out and get your videos just the right length.

It doesn't matter if you want to earn back some of what you spent making your videos or  become a strong business, YouTube's platform allows you to do that by making money with successful videos.

The first step to monetizing your channel is to get it ready to earn. For more important information about setting up your channel please check “Upgrade Your Business Strategy By Using YouTube Marketing“.

Monetizing Your YouTube Channel

In the past, to start monetizing your channel, you had to reach 10.000 views in total for all the videos you had uploaded on your channel. As I explained in above though, starting to monetize your channel takes a lot more effort now.

However, to do that, you have to go to youtube.com and access your channel. There you should see the monetization tab and then enable it.

The whole process might actually take a while because your channel and videos will then be viewed by YouTube and they will let you know whether they accept the monetization or not.

Once your videos have been approved, YouTube will place adds around your videos. (P.S. You can always opt out of it if you want)

After you have activated the monetization on your account, you will soon have to sign up for a Google Adsense account using your YouTube account's email.

Google Adsense Verification

However, after you do that, your Google Adsense account also needs to get approved. If they approve your account, then you'll have to go into the whole process of verifying your YouTube channel.

Soon after approving your account, Google Adsense will send you a letter in the mail containing a code to use in order to verify your address. You basically have to go back to your Google Adsense account and enter the code that they sent you.

Next, you'll have to verify the bank account, which is actually similar to the address process. You will have to put in your bank account information and they will send you an amount, under $1 which you'll then have to type in on your Google Adsense account. If the amount you entered is correct, your bank account information will be verified.

Last, but not least, after you've finished with the first steps, you need to verify your tax ID information. To do that, again, you have to go back to your Google Adsense account and put it in.

Receiving The Money

To actually receive the money you make, your payment threshold has to be $100. Basically, once you have the minimum payment threshold, they will directly deposit it into your bank account. Although, if you're under $100, they will not deposit your money.

ADS

To be honest with you, I wouldn't go for this type of monetization, especially if you already have a business. You don't want to drive customers away to other businesses, you want to drive them towards you!

In addition, you also have the possibility to make money with YouTube Red Subscription. There are some members that pay a recurring monthly fee for special benefits like watching videos without ads.

The amount of money you earn from this depends on how much time members spend watching your content compared to other content.

Affiliate links can be used in various ways. The most common one is Amazon affiliate links.

With Amazon affiliate links, you basically just link any products you want and then, when people click on those links and they buy things on amazon, you get a small percent of what they buy.

In general, that's how affiliate links work. You simply give a link to a product or a service and you get either a percent or some amount of money, every time somebody buys something or subscribes to a service.

The reason I believe they are great, is because they don't require that much effort from you. You basically just make what videos you want and you simply link things in your description. Also, with this, you don't even have to deal with the companies, you just look up whatever products you want and you link them down below. As a result, you don't have to deal with any of that headache that usually comes dealing with different companies.

Most people will send you free products and then get you to use their affiliate links. Although this can give you a lot of headache, so I would recommend being careful what products you agree to test free. This can turn into a bad situation if you don't set the right terms from the beginning.

Selling digital products

Digital products are great because you just basically make them, then you put them out there and sell them. You can sell unlimited quantities, you don't have to have any inventory or deal with shipping, and it's probably the best thing to sell online.

Marketing your blog / website

Whether you have an ecommerce website or a general blog, the amount of money you can make is a result of traffic.

You simply have to make short videos promoting your website/blog and products. Doing so, your business will be exposed to a massive group of internet users that are searching for topics related to the keywords you use in the title of your videos.

This will not only increase your viewing traffic, but also drive traffic to your website and that is just excellent!

Brand deals

Brands and ad companies have been around for a long time now. They are always looking for ways to promote their products and services. For example, they used movies and music as ways to promote their products and services.  Therefore, they would be eager to work with creators when the target audience for their product is similar to a creator's channel audience.

Merchandising products

Making merchandise like stickers, clothing, or other branded products, is a great way to grow your brand and achieve popularity. You can try using merch cards or annotations in your videos to help your fans find your material.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is when a community of fans are making donations to your project that are  consistent in money. You can raise funds to help support your channel by launching an external crowdfunded campaign.

Events

This is a perfect way to build an even stronger community by going to see them! You can schedule live appearances in places where your audiences are mostly  engaged.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, making money on YouTube is definitely not an easy way, but it's also not impossible. Even though, it takes a lot of time and effort, I believe it's a great way to expend your business opportunities and market your business.
